Business applications that are hosted on-premise are more likely to be attacked than apps hosted in cloud environments, a report by security provider Alert Logic finds.

The semiannual State of the Cloud Security Report, released on Tuesday, finds that for every incidence class, the number of incidents per impacted customer was higher in the on-premise environment. The average number of web application attacks is 61.4 among on-premise customers and 27.8 on service provider customers.

The report finds that web application attacks remain the most significant threat for service provider environments with 53 percent of customers affected. The majority of attacks were perpetrated using common and freely available tools.

Alert Logic released its first in a series of semi-annual reports on cloud security in February 2012. The results of its latest survey are based on threat data from more than 1,600 customers’ production environments.

While enterprise customers have often felt more comfortable hosting applications on-premise, attitudes of cloud security are changing. More and more enterprises are also realizing how much money they waste owning IT infrastructure.

“Unfortunately, the cloud security myth is a stereotype that has prevented the industry from focusing on the real issues impacting enterprise security,” Stephen Coty, research director at Alert Logic said in a statement. “Rather than falling victim to perception-based beliefs, businesses should leverage factual data to evaluate their vulnerabilities and better plan their security posture.”

This report comes a month after Alert Logic launched its managed web application firewall service to offer enterprise customers and partners firewall protection and blocking capabilities, and flexible deployment options.

A report by FireHost in April found that web application attacks are among the most common threats facing infrastructure in hosted and cloud environments.

On Wednesday, Intermedia launched its white label Cloud Server offering for its partners to move end-users’ business applications from on-premise to cloud servers.
