Web hosting provider DreamHost announced on Wednesday it has joined the OpenStack Foundation, which is dedicated to promoting the OpenStack cloud operating system.

DreamHost is a founding Gold member of the Foundation, and DreamHost CEO Simon Anderson was recently elected to the board of the Foundation representing Gold members.

Since its inception by Rackspace and NASA in July 2010, OpenStack continues to grow rapidly, and the formation of OpenStack Foundation should only increase participation and overall use of the open source platform.

With the support of 25 companies and a few dozen developers, the open source cloud platform has grown to more than 180 participating companies and 400 contributing developers, producing six software releases in a little over two years.

The web hosting provider says it is joining the Foundation in an effortto further establish its commitment to the community and its role in the OpenStack ecosystem.

DreamHost first announced its support for OpenStack in June 2011 with the contribution of code to integrate Ceph, its massively scalable, open source file system for managing petabyte-scale data, with the OpenStack code. Last week, DreamHost launched a cloud-based object storage service called DreamObjects, built on the open-source Ceph file system.

More recently, DreamHost’s software development team has been contributing code to the OpenStack project, leveraging next-generation technology incubated within DreamHost’s own development team and integrating it into the burgeoning cloud operating system.
