Domain name growth accounted for an uptick of 12% compared to the same time last year, SSL certificate provider Verisign revealed in a December report.
The most notable statistic, however, saw the introduction of 5.7 million new domain names to the web. Most of those, of course, belonged to the still very popular .COM TLD.
Meanwhile, among other growing TLDs were .DE, .NET, .UK, .ORG, and .CN, China’s ccTLD.
“The .com and .net TLDs experienced aggregate growth, reaching a combined total of approximately 119.9 million domain names in the adjusted zone in the third quarter of 2012. This represents a 1 percent increase in the base over the second quarter of 2012 and a 7.1 percent increase over the third quarter of 2011. As of Sept. 30, 2012, the base of registered names in .com equaled 105 million names, while .net equaled 14.9 million names,” stated Verisign in its report.
Country code domains are notably also experiencing a boost with the likes of ccTLDs from Germany, Tokelau, the U.K., and Russia all receiving significant registrations.
Along with the report, Verisign suggested several measures to combat the threat of DDoS attacks including centralizing data gathering, defining escalation paths and the use of layered filtering, among others.
