Cupertino tech giant Apple could soon be expanding its data center footprint. But this time, the

news marks a distinction for the company: It would be the iPhone maker’s first outside the United States.

NASDAQ.com reported on the news Monday, citing a report from The Hong Kong Economic Times which claimed to have sources

verifying the plans.

Not many specifics were provide, but the company would join tech giant Google which announced in September of last year that it would

be constructing its own facility on 2.7 hectares of land.

Apple currently maintains data centers in U.S. locations including Prineville, Oregon and Newark, California. The company also provides

60% of power for its Maiden, North Carolina data center at the facility’s site.

So if the report proves true, why Hong Kong? Google previously said a primary benefit was the area’s “combination of reliably energy

infrastructure.” Apple, meanwhile, could see the same value in the Asian market.

Social network provider Facebook also marked its first expansion past the U.S. market , last year announcing plans to add a facility in

Lulea, Sweden.
