An organization representing global governments has filed objections to more than 250 gTLDs applied for within ICANN’s application

period.

The group, known as GAC (Governmental Advisory Committee),acts within the confines of ICANN itself,is an expected part of the process and regularly meets alongside ICANN’s annual meetings.

ICANN initially unveiled the applied for domain endings in June. At the time, 1,930 gTLDs were in the mix. Then ICANN CEO Rod

Beckstrom said, “We are standing at the cusp of a new era of online innovation.”

A BBC report, meanwhile, noted that despite the high amount of grievances, ICANN still hoped to make the first new gTLDs available by

May of next year.

One such objected name, among many, includes an application for .APP filed by Amazon. GAC provides remediation steps for each

application, allowing registrants to possibly remove each objection.

For Amazon, GAC says the company “should specify transparent criteria  for third party access to the TLD. These criteria should be

appropriate for the types of risk associated with the TLD, and should not set anti-competitive or discriminatory conditions relating to

access by third parties.”

Other prominently opposed gTLDs included the likes of .game, .cloud, .blog, .wtf, .store, and .video.

If applicants decide to remove their gTLD requests, they can reclaim 80% of the initial application fee. However, it’s expected most will attempt the remediation steps.
