For all versions of Windows Live Messenger older than version 2011, Microsoft has released a compulsory update which may not please all users.

      For users who are still operating versions of Windows Live Messenger older than 2011, Microsoft has released an update that all users will be required to install. Qualified as minor, this update includes security patches, performance improvements, bug corrections and other changes.

      In reality, users started to receive this update from May last year, but it was not compulsory for the user to install. From this week, it will become obligatory and will possibly not please everyone.

      While this update is supposed to simplify the starting of video calls, its appearance last year led to numerous user complaints as it removed the possibility of using the webcam in one direction only. It is therefore impossible to display a webcam from only one party of a voice call. Microsoft has justified the removal of this function as they needed to make some large changes to the audio and video stack used via the Windows Live services.

      Windows XP users are only able to use older versions of Windows Live Messenger, as Windows Live Messenger 2011 is not compatible with their operating system. All Windows XP users will therefore be affected by this obligatory update.
