- Many Australian retailers, intimidated by the growing popularity of online shopping, are calling for a new tax on goods bought via the web from overseas. However, some electronic advocacy groups are asking the government to reconsider before passing such a measure.
An internet advocacy group called Electronic Frontiers Australia has launched a counter-campaign against retailers lobbying for online purchases to be taxed, claiming that online shopping offers far more benefits than drawbacks for Aussie consumers.
"There hasn't been any major evidence presented that this is a serious issue that's damaging the Australian economy or employment prospects," said Colin Jacobs, the group's chairman. "It would certainly inconvenience an awful lot of Internet users and online shoppers with ecommerce becoming more and more important. We don't want to damage that unless there's a very good reason."
Jacobs added that retailers may be trying to sabotage ecommerce portals with the tax, because they're concerned about online shopping's ever-increasing popularity with consumers.
"Traditional retailers see online as competitors and so they'll pursue anything they can to gain a competitive advantage or lessen the advantage of online retailers," he said. "This is obviously part of that strategy."Sourece:eWay
