  • What is WHOIS privacy?
WHOIS privacy is a service which hides your personal information from pubic view when you register a domain name.

This information can include your name, address, email address, telephone number and more. It is viewable through the publicly-searchable WHOIS database.

Our WHOIS privacy service replaces this information with the details of our privacy service, so your data stays safe.

Once you have purchased WHOIS privacy, you can turn it on and off whenever you like. However, if you turn it off, your personal details will be publicly visible again.

Which domain names can I get WHOIS privacy for?
WHOIS privacy is available for .com, .net, .org, .info, .biz, .name, .cc, .tv and .me domains.

Please note that you must wait 5 days after registering a .name domain before you can add WHOIS privacy.

You can also hide your details if you are an individual registering a .uk domain. This is done using the .uk WHOIS opt-out and is free. You'll be given this option when you buy a .uk domain.

How do I get WHOIS privacy?
If you're buying a new domain name, you can add WHOIS privacy during the order process. To add WHOIS privacy to a domain you already own, log in to your 123-reg control panel.

How long can I buy WHOIS privacy for?
You can buy WHOIS privacy annually. Please note that WHOIS privacy costs are not refundable.

This means if you purchase WHOIS privacy for a domain you are planning to let expire, you may not claim a refund for the period after your domain expires.

What information will be displayed for my domain name?
We use a privacy service, contactprivacy.com, to hide your details. The service's information will be displayed in place of your own details.

You will be allocated an email address so people with legitimate queries about your domain can still get in touch. This will forward messages onto your main mail address.

Can I choose what information to display?
No. There are strict regulations about what information can be displayed. It is important that a member of the public can contact you if they have a questions about your domain. The contactprivacy.com details ensure this is still possible.

Do I still own my domain name?
Yes. The service protects your privacy. It does not change who owns your domain name.
