More than three quarters of IT professionals have experienced a data center outage in the past year, a report released on Tuesday by disaster recovery company Zerto said.
In a survey of 356 IT professionals, including IT managers, VMware and sys admins, Zerto found that 42 percent of respondents report to have experienced an outage in the last six months, with 86 percent of those incidents caused by something other than a natural disaster. The top two causes of a data center outage are hardware failure and power loss.
     According to the report, 7 percent of companies have no disaster recovery plan at all, which is particularly disturbing when you see the different types of industries the respondents work in, including finance, healthcare, legal, education, pharmaceuticals and manufacturing. In a report from 2011, data center association AFCOM found that more than 15 percent of data centers have no plan for business continuity or disaster recovery.
More than 70 percent of respondents have a snapshot-based disaster recovery solution, and only 30 percent of respondents have 75 percent or more of their environment protected with a disaster recovery plan.
    Half of those surveyed cite complexity is one of the biggest challenges of disaster recovery, a trend that could be helped by disaster recovery as a service, which several hosts have launched this year, including Bluelock. Bluelock launched its recovery as a service solution in May using Zerto Virtual Replication.
    Zerto said that private and public cloud disaster recovery is growing in popularity, with 32 percent of respondents considering private cloud DR.
    “Though more than three quarters of respondents reported having experienced an outage in the last 12 months, and many have a DR solution in place, few are confident their DR solution will actually work,” Ziv Kedem, co-founder and CEO, Zerto said in a statement. “This study reflects that while many solutions are available for disaster recovery, no legacy solutions are providing the service levels and simplicity needed for mission-critical application protection in virtualized and cloud environments.”
