Apple Inc. on Thursday started giving software developers access to a new version of its Mac OS X operating system, called Mountain Lion.

The company is porting many features from the iPhone and the iPad to Mac desktops and laptops. The new software's arrival comes just seven months after Apple's last OS X release. "To turn the crank this fast is jaw-dropping," Chief Executive Tim Cook said.

Here's a selection of the more than 100 changes and updates, which consumers will see in late summer.
