Web analytics firm Netcraft reported the results of its December 2011 survey, which saw responses from 555,482,744 sites.
This marked an increase of 29.5 million since last month's web survey. Since June, all major web server vendors have continuously gained hostnames.
Just like last month, Apache experienced the largest increase of over 20 million hostnames, making it the largest gain for the web server in five months.
Microsoft had the second largest increase with an additional 1.2 million hostnames. Despite this increase, the server still had a losing market share.
nginx bounced back from its recent loss with an all-time high of 8.85 percent market share.
All four server vendors saw an increase in active sites this month, while Apache experienced the largest increase with a gain of nearly 1.5 million sites.
Microsoft gained 0.5 million active sites increasing its market share lead over nginx by 0.7 percent. Overall, this month's Netcraft survey had a total of 175 million active sites.
