Several popular web sites agreed to participate on the first global-scale trial of IPv6, dubbed as the World IPv6 Day. This will take place on June 8, 2011. During this event, participants are required to provide support for native IPv6 traffic on their web sites. Content delivery networks Limelight and Akamai Networks will join the event, which is sponsored by the Internet Society.
IPv4 uses 32-bit addresses and support 4.3 billion devices that are connected directly to the internet. IPv6 uses 128-bit addresses and re supported by unlimited number of devices. During the World IPv6 Day, there will be an increase in IPv6 traffic all over the internet. At present, only one-twentieth of one percent of the overall internet traffic is represented by IPv6.
A small number of users will experience slowdowns during the World IPv6 Day because of misconfigured network equipment. There will be hiccups but experts believe that IPv6 will work. Facebook and Google have been supporting IPv6 at separate web addresses but on the World IPv6 Day, they will enable IPv6 on their major traffic-heavy sites.
The Internet Society hopes that the World IPv6 Day will prompt content providers, hardware manufacturers, ISPs, and OS suppliers to use IPv6 as soon as possible.
