This may be a surprise to the tech-savvy lot that clicked on this headline, but more than half the Internet is still being browsed by Microsoft's Internet Explorer.
Even more surprising—and bad news for Google's Chrome operating system project—is that Google's browser is still being beat out by the oldest version of Internet Explorer still found in the wild.
Chrome users make up 9.26 percent of the browsing pie, while 13.72 percent of users are using IE6.
IE6 was released in 2001. From Wikipedia:
This version of Internet Explorer is widely derided for its security issues and lack of support for modern web standards, making frequent appearances in "worst tech products of all time" lists, with some publications labeling it as the "least secure software on the planet.
The Observer's readers are up on the newer browsers, it seems: 14 percent use Chrome, 20 percent use Safari, 30 percent use Firefox. Thirty-three percent use Internet Explorer, and only six percent of them are on IE6.We even register some hits from the exotic Norwegian browser Opera.
Internet Explorer retains its stronghold in part because it comes preloaded on computers running Windows and evidence suggests there isn't much brand awareness for browsers.
