4Chan Taken Down By DDoS Attack

  •       Internet message board 4chan.org is down, apparently due to a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack.

"Site is down due to DDoS. We now join the ranks of MasterCard, Visa, PayPal, et al.—an exclusive club!" 4chan founder Christopher "moot" Poole wrote in a blog post.

Poole was referring to DDoS attacks perpetrated against financial institutions that cut ties with WikiLeaks. Those attacks were carried out by Operation Payback, which is operated by the clandestine group known as "Anonymous" and reportedly includes members of 4chan.org.

This isn't the first time 4Chan.org has run into trouble. In February, Verizon blocked access to 4Chan affiliates. Last year AT&T also blocked 4Chan briefly.

While major sites can usually bounce back from a DDoS attack, a report from the Berkman Center said independent media and human rights sites are often crippled by such attacks.
