  • The second Management session of HostingCon 2013 day two explored the growth strategy of deploying a service versus acquiring the technology.

Moderated by ScienceLogic’s Antonio Piraino, the panel was comprised of DH Capital’s Peter Hopper, NCC International’s Tom Millitzer, Rackspace Hosting’s Pat Matthews, and Media Venture Partners’ Paul Stapleton.

The panel members discussed the pros and cons of the two strategies, which proved that neither one strategy should be used in all scenarios.

Matthews said that when considering an M&A deal, Rackspace Hosting looks at the company’s product capabilities and the people.

Addressing the question, “How can companies position themselves to be desirable for an M&A deal?”, Hopper said that companies should be delivering organic growth and offer product differentiation.

Millitzer recommended that companies should have their financials audited as it will make your company more desirable.

Hopper stressed that companies should focus on building a company like they’re going to own it for a while, and not just treating it with the end goal of selling it off.

The panelists all agreed that quality customer service is the focal point of building a great company, and that companies should work toward providing the best customer service that they can.

Hopper said that a company’s “size in and of itself” isn’t a driving reason to acquire a hosting business, because there are a large number of M&A deals that happen each year involving smaller hosting companies.

Are you looking to sell your hosting business? Do you think that your company is in the right position for an M&A deal?
