  • The first Technology session of day two of HostingCon 2013 tackled what is quite possibly the biggest trend in hosting today: the hybrid cloud.

The panel discussed the increasing level of demand in hybrid services, along with its many opportunities and challenges.

Moderated by 451 Research senior analyst Al Sadowski, the panel included VAZATA president and CEO Lance Black, Telx GM of cloud and IT services John Freimuth, OnRamp founder Chad Kissinger, and Cequel Data Centers CFO Andy Stewart.

The first question addressed to the panel, “Is colocation evolving?”, saw a resounding “yes” from panel members.

Freimuth stressed that companies want options, whether it’s colocation or hybrid cloud, and that the key to succeeding in this field is to offer as many options as possible.

Stewart said that the biggest challenge is the ability to sell and deploy customer solutions. The complexity of cloud services and their pricing structure make it particularly difficult to sell and deploy.

Security continues to be the greatest concern, said Black, and it’s all about the level of education you provide your customers with the proper information.

He stressed that security is “no longer a barrier of entry to the cloud”.

Kissinger said that in the end it is up to colocation companies to provide sufficient insurance and availability for compliance reasons.

Stewart says the two biggest challenges to overcome in the cloud and colocation are latency and customer education.

What are your challenges in selling and deploying colocation and cloud services? Do you think that the hybrid cloud will continue see greater demand in the future?

The economy host plan only cost 30.6/yr, normal price 85/yr.
