Google Goo.gl API Plans for Launch.

Google is preparing for the launch of the goo.gl API, according to a Mashable report. In preparation for this launch, the Internet giant has taken the next step in expanding its URL shortener, goo.gl, and integrating it into third-party apps.

Like the URL shortener, the new API is reportedly straightforward and provides developers with the ability to use goo.gl to shorten or expand their URLs and to retrieve URL history and analytics.

Google's (News - Alert) Ben D'Angelo said in a blog post announcing the API that the features could be used for a wide variety of applications to enable behaviors such as auto-shortening within Twitter or Google Buzz, or running regular jobs that monitor overall usage statistics and traffic patterns.

While the launch of the goo.gl API may not seem like the most exciting initiative to come out of Google, URL shorteners are actually becoming a very promising business. This segment of the market was once dominated by Bit.ly and Google is likely planning to siphon off users with its API to build more profit potential.

And, since the Google API offers integration with other Google products, spam protection and speed, the platform is likely to be a desirable alternative for developers seeking tools to speed up their apps.

Last month, it was reported that a Twitter worm was abusing Google’s goo.gle link shortening service. Links were pushed out through the shortener service and anyone who clicked on the link was redirected to a compromised website of a French furniture company before being directed to other domains. This worm hit last month and spread through mobile Twitter platforms.

In other Google news, TMCnet reported last week that TV maker Vizio is making the move into the smartphone and tablet computer space and plans to work with Google to compete on par with Apple and Research in Motion.

Vizio’s smartphone product will feature a four-inch screen and front- and rear-facing cameras. The Via Tablet will offer an 8-inch high-resolution screen, WiFi and a front-facing camera. Both devices are reportedly powered by the Google Android (News - Alert) operating system and will be sold in Walmart and Costco stores.
