In a 5-4 vote, the Hoboken City Council voted in support of using eminent domain to acquiesce land for a park in the southwest area of the city.
The vote has no legal bearing, and is used to show support of Hoboken Mayor Dawn Zimmer's ability to use eminent domain.
"No other section has waited longer, and every election they are promised a park," said Councilman Tim Occhipinti. "We have to be aggressive."
Occhipinti voted in support of the park, along with councilmembers Peter Cunningham, Carol Marsh, Ravi Bhalla and David Mello.
Councilmembers Mike Russo, Jen Giattino, Theresa Castellano and Beth Mason voted against the measure.
In 2008, Hoboken received $3 million in funding from Open Space Trust Fund, which allowed municipalities in Hudson County to finish "shovel-ready" projects.
Three years later, the funds have not been using, leading the county to allow a one-time repurposing of funds.
Mayor Dawn Zimmer wrote to the council that she proposes using eminent domain to obtain land for a park in the southwest area of Hoboken, between Ninth Street and Fourteenth Street.
