At a Tuesday afternoon keynote speech at WorldHostingDays, Scality’s Jerome Lecat discussed where he sees the future of public and private clouds going and how the industry as a whole is going to change. While none of Lecat’s predictions were shocking, he did attempt to look fairly far down the line – 10 years or so – and tell everyone in the audience what he saw there.

His visions? That public clouds will largely replace private ones, that most applications will be cloud-based or at least cloud “style,” that infrastructure will be handled by outsourced service providers, and that apps will take data from clouds without the need for manual interaction. From Lecat’s perspective, the development of the cloud is akin to cell phones – there was a time when we all had to remember phone numbers and directions and couldn’t email and text on the fly, but as soon as such technology existed and its use had been proven, it became essential to have, untenable to operate without.

So too, he says, will be the cloud, as users demand more and more from their providers, and among those things that companies will come to see as essentials will be scalability, low TCO, a true 100% uptime with no scheduled maintenance and performance that isn’t limited by virtue of the fact that data is being held in the cloud. He also acknowledges the need for cloud storage, though warns that companies may trap themselves if their storage becomes more costly to maintain the more they produce. Though Lecat doesn’t have a crystal ball, his reasoning for the decline of the private cloud in favor of public options certainly has validity – but only time will tell.
