The body that oversees the Domain Name System, ICANN, and INTERPOL have met to discuss avenues for closer collaboration on Internet security.

The rapid rise of the Internet has not only seen it being used for good – as an educational, social and economic tool, but has also seen it become somewhat of a haven for criminals who thrive in the semi-anonymous environment.

The recent discussion between ICANN and INTERPOL, the world’s largest international police organisation,  focused on Internet security governance improving common tools for preventing and pursuing Internet crime.

ICANN President and CEO Rod Beckstrom said the organisation was very pleased with Interpol’s interest in joining the ICANN Governmental Advisory Committee as an observer. 

Interpol Secretary General Ronald K. Noble commented that both organizations are international and politically neutral and have a special interest in improving the security of the Internet for the future.

Noting that the Internet has no borders, and neither do the criminals who use it to cause havoc, Secretary General Noble said it was vital for Interpol to assist in building bridges between the international law enforcement community and ICANN in order to improve Internet security practices to benefit all who use it.

While the possible inclusion of Interpol has caused concern for some in relation the amount of influence the police organisation may exert, it’s by no means a certainty yet. An Interpol delegation will be in attendance at ICANN’s international conference in Singapore in June, when the organisation’s membership of  ICANN’s Governmental Advisory Committee as an international observer will be explored.

INTERPOL has 188 member countries and aims to facilitate international police co-operation even in situations where diplomatic relations between countries do not exist. The organisation says it acts within the limits of laws that exist in different countries and does engage in intervention or activities of a political, military, religious or racial character.
